A person is of more value than a world
Good Shepherd Sisters Justice and Peace contact persons representing France, Spain, Portugal, England, Malta, Switzerland, Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic and Ireland met in Geneva, Switzerland in September 2009. The venue for the meeting was the Franciscans International.
The main focus of the work was, The Declaration of Human Rights an important aspect of the work of the United Nations in Geneva. A central part of the Justice and Peace meeting then was to understand the United Nations’ structure, role, functions and Treaty Bodies. To that end there was a visit to the Palais Wilson, the Headquarters of the Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights and a tour of the United Nations Building.
Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd has been affiliated with the United Nations as a Nongovernmental Organization in special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council since 1996.
The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), established by the UN Charter, is the principal organ to coordinate the economic, social and related work of the United Nations and the specialized agencies and institutions.
The purpose of this affiliation is to further Good Shepherd mission of reconciliation, particularly in its orientation toward girls and women. Through this means of collaboration the Congregation work to bring about change in whatever conditions condemn others to a marginalized life.
Through the affiliation with the goals of the United Nations, the Congregation seek to extend mercy to those in poverty and oppression, awakening the world to the dignity and value of each person.
